All Ages Comics ^^ 7/2/08

It’s another short list, but it’s a great time for all ages manga!  We’ve got three new book rated for everyone.  There’s a new Warriors book from Harper Collins.  It’s a stand alone after the origins of Scourge, the leader of the Blood Clan from the first series of novels.  Viz has another title from the well known creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama.  Cowa! is about a half-vampire/half-werekoala and the adventures he goes on.  Koi Cupid is a new series from Broccoli International, a boutique publisher that has other all ages titles.

Koi Cupid Volume 1 – Three Cupids-in-training, Koi, Ai & Ren are trying to earn the stamps that will make their full fledged Cupids.  To do that, they must play by the rules, and not get in trouble, something this trio seems to have a hard time of.  They try not to break the rules, but something always gets in the way.  This is very much a young girl’s title.  The art is very cute, as are the girls.  The story of helping others find love is also very much for the girls.  While I’m all for non-gender specific titles, sometimes it’s nice to see something that is just for the girls.  Fairies are popular with girls right now, and these characters look like them, with stories that sound very similar to stories being written for Tween girls right now.  I think this would make a good gateway for young girls to manga.

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam #1 – This new addition to the Johnny DC line introduces kids to the Superhero Captain Marvel, the world’s mightest mortal.  Eleven year old Billy Batson was granted great powers by the Greek Gods, and when he says the word “Shazam”, he is transformed into the Superhero, Captain Marvel, and uses his powers for good.  This book doesn’t start off with the re-telling of Billy Batson’s origins (thankfully), but instead seems to follow events that have been happening in the currect DC Universe.  Theo Adam has returned from banishment, but has forgotten the magic word that changes him into Black Adam.  He decides to follow Captain Marvel and get it from his alter ego, Billy Batson.  The art is the same style as many of the Cartoon Network titles.  It’s very cartoony and meant for it’s target audience.  This looks like a good title to introduce an old hero favorite to a younger generation.
